Subject: Technical Activities Region 9

Dear Colleagues:

Last weekend I was attending the first 1998 IEEE-CAS meeting (IEEE-CAS president Rui de Figueiredo, President Advisory Committee (PAC), Executive committee (EXCOM) and Board of Governors (BOG)). In this meeting we discussed the plan of activities for 1998 and beyond. I felt a very positive atmosphere during the meeting, please go through the message from our president published in the march issue of the IEEE-CAS Newsletter. For region IX, I proposed the following actions:

i) Promotion of new chapters in the region, at least one per country
ii) Organisation of two regional workshops, one in Central-America and another one in SouthAmerica. This year We are organising the "Second workshop on Mixed-Mode Integrated Circuits" in Guanajuato Mexico (July 27-29), next year this workshop will be held in other country. It is very desirable your contribution in order to make this event a real Latin-American Conference. We need to plan the workshops (two) for the next year.
iii) For this year, I would like to organise a CAS-TOUR. The idea is to invite well recognised researchers to give half-day courses within a 2-3 day program. These courses will move around 3 different countries. These activities must be cordinated by regional chapters.
iv) In November 1996, we created in Mexico the "Latin America Cordination Group for Research in Electronics" (LACE).
This group is open for our chapters and I invite you to participate in their activities. This group played a very important role in the organisation of the first International workshop on mixed-mode integrated circuits, Cancun-97, and is supporting the second one. In fact, among of other researchers, many of the lecturers for the CAS tours can be members of LACE.
v) List of LACE members
Dr. Guillermo Espinosa F.V., INAOE Mexico, Actual president
Dr. Paulo Diniz, UFRJ Brazil, Actual Vice-president
Dr. Jose Silva-Martinez, INAOE Mexico, Technical activities chair.
Dr. Edgar Sanchez-Sinencio, Texas A&M University, USA
Dr. Franco Maloberti, University of Pavia, Italy
Dr. Jose Luis Huertas, CNM, Spain
Dr. Jose Franca, Instituto Tecnico de Portugal, Portugal
Dr. Jaime Ramirez-Angulo, New Mexico University, Las Cruces, USA
Dr. Eduardo Barros da Silva, UFRJ, Brazil
I want to mention Prof. John Choma who participated in several activities and He kindly accepted to help us in future actions.

It is my intention to push technical activities in our region, if you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact me. Please circulate this mail to those groups you consider are interested into join us. I will appreciate very much if you help me in contacting research groups in Colombia, Costa Rica, Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Caribbe, Nicaragua, Panama,
Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia.
